Please Be Mean to Me
I am continually amazed by the disrespect I receive as a customer-service provider. Let me make a disclaimer: most of my customers (museum members) are absolutely wonderful, and we do nothing but exchange happy smiles all day long. But there have been a string of people who have gotten so angry at me because I won't break the rules, and therefore have berated me, and been increasingly rude. AS IF BEING RUDE TO THE PERSON YOU WANT SOMETHING FROM WILL GET YOU BETTER, FASTER, NICER SERVICE.

I feel your pain. My social service job has less face-to-face contact with the general public than most customer service jobs, but there are some bad apples. The applicants who are polite and honest will get all the help we can give and referrals to every other agency in town that might possibly assist them. The few mean ones don't know that every rude thing they say will be written verbatim on their housing application (i.e. "Applicant came in intoxicated, screamed "F*** you!" at receptionist"). Sometimes I wonder if their anger is just frustration at their problems or actually the reason they have trouble getting a job, a home etc. Rudeness definately does not pay.
