First Day

Yes, it's the first day of school, and it feels really comfortable, like your favorite pair of pants, even if they are out of style. Had my sociology class that lasted 40 minutes. Don't know how I feel about that one. Professor went into a whole things about how this won't be a lecture class, that we will mostly be working in small groups and talking and doing projects together....BARF! Not my idea of a good class. I don't like people. They are smelly, and I do a lot better by myself. I hate these goddamn classes where we're all supposed to be lovey-dovey and such. Speaking of which, on the syllabus for this class, there was a whole tirade about "sexist" language, and you aren't allowed to say "man's inhumanity to man" it has to be "human beings inhumanity to human beings" and you can't say "man and wife" or whatever. My prof. is a politically correct despot. UGH. Off to my first english class: shakespeare! Now if that ain't the meat and pototoes of an english degree than I don't know what is.

A BIG RANT ABOUT GROUP PROJECTS

"This isn't going to be a lecture class" means "I am too lazy to follow my own lesson plan and prepare notes".

"Group work" is the most overrated academic exercise I have ever seen. Even in college, some students are stupid enough to do nothing and drag everyone's grade down to a C. Teachers who approve of this give you the same tired line that "This will prepare you for the world of work where you will do group projects daily".

Thank God that has not been the case with my employers. Everyone is responsible for her or his own tasks and anyone who fails to do their part of a large project is punished, and if it goes on, fired. No employer would ever withhold my pay because a co-worker fucked up. Why should a professor give a mediocre grade to a group when some students worked hard on their project and others cut class that day?
